Our Story
Founded in 2002, the Jackson Hole Institute (JHI) brings leaders and communities together in Jackson Hole, building ideas and turning them into action. We leverage Jackson Hole's "power of place' to drive breakthroughs on the world’s toughest challenges, with a focus on the just energy transformation.

From the beginning, we’ve carved out a unique niche—working within the globe’s largest coal-producing regions to scale energy transformation from the inside out. By partnering directly with local communities, we accelerate strategies for economic diversification that create new jobs, attract new industries, and build thriving communities, ensuring energy leadership continues well into the future.
At the global level, in 2003, JHI, known then as the Jackson Hole Center for Global Affairs, launched our ongoing flagship project; the U.S. China Clean Energy Initiative. This initiative has worked to strengthen clean energy collaboration in fields including carbon capture and beyond between Wyoming and Shanxi, China, the two largest coal-producing regions from the globe’s two largest economies and carbon emitting nations: the USA and China. For the globe to act on climate, the U.S. and China must lead.

JHI manages the Jackson Hole Investor Group. The JHIG works with federal and state partners to build bridges and investment action between Jackson Hole and national accredited investors and Wyoming's clean energy opportunities. The JHIG has evolved into a leading platform that attracts leading energy projects to Wyoming and helps them succeed in the state. We also work with partners to hold roundtables for energy communities to strengthen strategies to navigate the energy transformation.

Our Jackson Hole Summit series brings leaders in business, government, investment markets, civil society and more together to generate new thinking on global challenges, with a focus on climate change. The Global Change Series are free, public events for the Jackson community that dig into the largest global challenges. Since 2008, our Global Business Roundtable, has been a leading local speaker series that brings the group's members together with dynamic global thinkers, creating a unique Jackson Hole ideas incubation zone.

In all of our work, we welcome collaboration.
